What Is a Frequency Table?

A frequency table is a table used to organise data by showing how often each value, category or group occurs. The word frequency means the number of times something happens. For example, if a class records favourite colours, the frequency table might show red 6, blue 9, green 4 and yellow 3. This makes the data easier to read than a long list of individual answers.

A simple frequency table usually has two columns. One column lists the values or categories, and the other column lists the frequency. Sometimes a tally column is added to help count the data accurately before writing the final frequency. Tally marks are grouped in fives, which makes counting quicker and reduces mistakes when collecting survey results or experiment data.

Frequency tables are used in statistics, data handling, probability, surveys, science experiments, business data and real-life research. At GCSE level, students use frequency tables to calculate totals, draw bar charts, create pie charts, find averages and interpret patterns. They may also use grouped frequency tables when the data is organised into intervals, such as heights from 150 to 160 centimetres.

The total frequency is found by adding all the frequencies. If a table shows 6, 9, 4 and 3, the total frequency is 6 plus 9 plus 4 plus 3, which equals 22. This means 22 pieces of data were collected. Total frequency is important because it is often used in probability, percentages and averages. For example, if 9 out of 22 students chose blue, the fraction choosing blue is 9 over 22.

Frequency tables can be used to find the mode. The mode is the value or category with the highest frequency. If blue has frequency 9 and all other colours have lower frequencies, blue is the modal colour. For numerical data, a frequency table can also help find the median and estimate the mean, depending on whether the data is listed exactly or grouped into classes.

Grouped frequency tables are used when there are many different values or when exact values are less important than intervals. For example, test scores could be grouped as 0 to 10, 11 to 20, 21 to 30 and so on. Grouped data is useful for seeing the overall distribution, but it may lose some detail because the exact individual values are not shown.

Frequency tables often lead to diagrams. A bar chart can be drawn from a frequency table by using the categories and their frequencies. A pie chart can be created by converting frequencies into angles or proportions. A histogram can be used for grouped continuous data when frequency density is involved. This shows why frequency tables are a foundation for many statistics questions.
