Pie Chart definition
A pie chart is a circular chart used to show how a whole data set is divided into categories. The circle represents the whole amount, and each sector represents one category. The size of each sector shows the size of that category compared with the whole. For example, a pie chart could show how students travel to school, with sectors for walking, bus, car, cycling and train.
A full circle contains 360 degrees, so the angles in a pie chart must add to 360 degrees. If a category represents half of the data, its sector angle is 180 degrees. If a category represents a quarter of the data, its sector angle is 90 degrees. This connection between parts of a whole and angles is what makes pie charts useful in statistics.
Pie charts are used in statistics, data handling, surveys, business, media, finance, science and real-life reporting. At GCSE level, students interpret pie charts, calculate sector angles, find frequencies from angles or percentages, and compare data categories. Pie charts are most useful when the data is split into clear categories and the aim is to show proportions of a whole.
To draw a pie chart from frequencies, first find the total frequency. Then calculate the angle for each category using the formula sector angle equals category frequency divided by total frequency times 360 degrees. For example, if 10 out of 40 students walk to school, the sector angle is 10 divided by 40 times 360, which equals 90 degrees. This gives a quarter of the pie chart.
Pie charts also connect closely to percentages. If a category is 20% of the data, it should take 20% of the circle. Since 20% of 360 degrees is 72 degrees, the sector angle is 72 degrees. This makes pie charts a visual way to show fractions, decimals and percentages. Students should be comfortable moving between these forms when interpreting charts.
When reading a pie chart, the largest sector represents the most common category, and the smallest sector represents the least common category. However, exact values may require calculation. If the total number of people is known, a sector can be converted into a frequency. For example, if a sector is 90 degrees out of 360 degrees and the total is 80 people, the frequency is one quarter of 80, which is 20 people.
Pie charts are effective for showing proportions, but they are not always the best chart. If there are many categories, the sectors can become too small to read clearly. If exact comparisons are needed, a bar chart may be easier. A pie chart should be used when the data represents one whole group and each item belongs to one category only.
