What Is a Scatter Graph?

A scatter graph is a type of statistical diagram used to show the relationship between two variables. Each point on the graph represents one pair of data values. For example, a scatter graph might show the relationship between hours revised and test score. One point could represent a student who revised for 4 hours and scored 65 marks. By plotting many points, patterns in the data can be seen more clearly.

Scatter graphs are useful because they show whether two quantities appear to be connected. The horizontal axis usually shows one variable, and the vertical axis shows the other variable. Each item or person in the data set gives one plotted point. The points are not usually joined together because the graph is not showing a continuous journey. It is showing separate paired observations.

Scatter graphs are used in statistics, data handling, science, geography, business, sport, medicine and real-life research. At GCSE level, students use scatter graphs to describe correlation, identify outliers, draw a line of best fit and make predictions. They are often used when two numerical variables are collected, such as height and arm span, temperature and ice cream sales, or age and reaction time.

Correlation describes the relationship shown by the points. Positive correlation means that as one variable increases, the other variable tends to increase too. For example, more revision time may be linked with higher test scores. Negative correlation means that as one variable increases, the other variable tends to decrease. For example, as the age of a car increases, its value may decrease.

No correlation means there is no clear relationship between the two variables. The points may look scattered randomly with no upward or downward pattern. For example, shoe size and exam score would probably have no meaningful correlation. It is important not to invent a relationship when the data does not show one. Scatter graphs help students make conclusions based on evidence rather than guesses.

A line of best fit is a straight line drawn through the general trend of the points. It does not need to pass through every point. Instead, it should have roughly the same number of points on each side and follow the overall pattern. A line of best fit can be used to estimate values, but predictions are most reliable within the range of the data. Predicting far outside the data range can be risky.

An outlier is a point that does not fit the general pattern of the other points. Outliers can happen because of unusual results, errors in measurement or genuinely different cases. For example, one student may revise for many hours but still score low because they misunderstood the topic. When interpreting a scatter graph, outliers should be noticed because they can affect predictions and conclusions.
