What Is Standard Form?

Standard Form definition

Standard form is a way of writing very large or very small numbers in a shorter and clearer form. A number in standard form is written as a value between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. For example, 45,000 can be written as 4.5 times 10 to the power of 4. This is easier to read and compare than writing many zeros.

The first part of a standard form number must be at least 1 but less than 10. This part is sometimes called the ordinary number or coefficient. The second part is a power of 10, which shows how far the decimal point has moved. For example, 3.2 times 10 to the power of 6 means 3.2 multiplied by 1,000,000, which equals 3,200,000.

Standard form is used in number, indices, science, engineering, finance, astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics and calculator work. At GCSE level, students convert ordinary numbers into standard form, convert standard form back into ordinary numbers, calculate with standard form and round answers to suitable significant figures. It is especially useful when the numbers involved are too large or too small to write comfortably.

Positive powers of 10 are used for large numbers. For example, 7.8 times 10 to the power of 5 equals 780,000 because the decimal point moves 5 places to the right. The larger the positive power, the larger the number. This makes standard form helpful for distances in space, populations, computer storage and large financial values.

Negative powers of 10 are used for small numbers between 0 and 1. For example, 6.4 times 10 to the power of -3 equals 0.0064 because the decimal point moves 3 places to the left. Negative powers are common in science, especially when describing tiny measurements such as cell sizes, wavelengths, masses of particles or concentrations.

To convert an ordinary large number into standard form, move the decimal point until the first number is between 1 and 10. Count how many places it moves. For example, 560,000 becomes 5.6 times 10 to the power of 5 because the decimal point moves 5 places. To convert back, move the decimal point in the direction shown by the power of 10.

Calculations in standard form often use index laws. When multiplying numbers in standard form, multiply the ordinary numbers and add the powers of 10. When dividing, divide the ordinary numbers and subtract the powers of 10. Sometimes the answer must be adjusted so the first number is between 1 and 10. This final check is important in exam answers.
