Statistics is the area of mathematics that deals with data. It involves collecting, organising, analysing, presenting and interpreting information. Data can come from surveys, experiments, measurements, observations, business records or real-life events. For example, a class might collect data about test scores, heights, favourite subjects or time spent revising. Statistics helps turn that information into useful conclusions.

Statistics is important because raw data can be difficult to understand. A long list of numbers does not always show a clear pattern. By using tables, charts, averages and measures of spread, the data becomes easier to compare and explain. For example, the mean test score can summarise performance, while the range can show how spread out the scores are.

Statistics is used in education, science, medicine, sport, finance, business, weather forecasting, politics, engineering, marketing and everyday decision making. At GCSE level, students study averages, range, frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, histograms, scatter graphs, probability and sampling. At A-Level, statistics includes probability distributions, hypothesis testing, regression, correlation and more detailed data analysis.

Averages are a major part of statistics. The mean is found by adding values and dividing by the number of values. The median is the middle value when data is ordered. The mode is the most common value. Each average gives a different type of summary. Choosing the most suitable average depends on the data and the question being asked.

Measures of spread are also important. The range shows the difference between the largest and smallest values. A small range means the data is close together, while a large range means the values are more spread out. In more advanced statistics, students may use interquartile range and standard deviation. These ideas help describe consistency, variation and reliability.

Graphs and charts help present data visually. A bar chart is useful for categories, a pie chart shows parts of a whole, a histogram displays grouped continuous data, and a scatter graph shows the relationship between two variables. Choosing the correct display is an important skill because a poor chart can make data confusing or misleading.

Statistics also links closely to probability. Probability measures how likely events are, while statistics often uses collected data to estimate or test those chances. For example, a spinner may be tested many times to see whether it behaves fairly. The experimental results can then be compared with theoretical probabilities. This connection helps students understand uncertainty in a structured way.
