Substitution in maths means replacing a letter or variable with a given value, number or expression. After the replacement is made, the expression or formula can be calculated or simplified. For example, if x equals 4, then the expression 3x plus 2 becomes 3 times 4 plus 2, which equals 14. The letter x has been substituted with the value 4.
Substitution is one of the most important skills in algebra because letters often stand for unknown, changing or general values.
