A-Level Maths is a significant step up from GCSE. Students are expected to understand methods in more depth, connect different topics and solve longer problems with less guidance. A-Level Maths usually includes pure maths, mechanics and statistics. Pure maths may cover algebra, functions, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, sequences, logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors. Mechanics may include forces, motion, projectiles and moments. Statistics may include probability, hypothesis testing, distributions, sampling, correlation and regression.


Example A-Level task: Differentiate y = 3x² + 5x - 4. Using the power rule, the derivative of 3x² is 6x, the derivative of 5x is 5, and the derivative of -4 is 0. Therefore dy/dx = 6x + 5. This basic rule becomes the foundation for harder calculus involving tangents, stationary points, optimisation and modelling.


A strong A-Level student needs both understanding and exam discipline. It is not enough to memorise methods; students must select the correct approach from a question that may combine several ideas.
